The Urim and the Thummim
Mysterious revealer of futures

First,
Back to the Urim and Thummim.
Most mysterious.
Holy.
Above the twelve stones of the tribes of Israel worn on the breastplate of the High Priest...
This ‘curious’ work shines forth instruction.
And so.
Let's dig into the Hebrew of these two unusual names. (As per Dave's zero scholarly credentials) the meaning of the 'Urim and Thummim' are as follows…
“Perfections and lights” (Or to prise that open a bit more; “To give perfect DIVINE light. Instruction. Insight. Illumination by God who is light”).*
Hence.
To the righteous seeking help of the LORD GOD of Israel,
He grants...
Instant CLARITY.
An emphatic...
Yes! Or,
NO!
Thus...
It’s possible David never went to war without consulting it. Hence he knew a battle was won in advance before lifting up a spear.
Plus,
The Urim revealed exactly who would betray him, so he could escape before his enemies nabbed him.
(Knowing who'll betray you in advance = very useful)
“David knew that Saul was plotting harm against him. And he said to Abiathar the priest, “Bring the ephod here*
Then David said,
“O Lord, the God of Israel, your servant has surely heard that Saul seeks to come to Keilah... to destroy the city on my account.
Will the men of Keilah surrender me into his hand?
Will Saul come down, as your servant has heard?
O Lord, the God of Israel, please tell your servant.”
And the Lord said,
“He will come down.”
Then David said,
“Will the men of Keilah surrender me and my men into the hand of Saul?”
And the Lord said, “They will surrender you.”
1 Samuel 23:912 ESV
Not good eh?
Especially as David just saved the town Keilah from plundering Philistine armies. In return they betray him?
Grim. And in times like these,
You need 100% accurate counsel.
Thankfully, David escaped, (tho' only just).
So,
When the stakes are high, deploy the Urim in your life.
It is never wrong.
For example.
One Sunday evening I arrived home from church all excited.
Babbling away to my wife I explained…
A man had rather dramatically 'come back to the LORD' in the meeting I'd been preaching in.
Yet here’s the thing.
Before I even had chance to tell her his name,
She said…
“NEVER BRING HIM HERE!”
Somewhat stunned,
I tried explaining how GOD had moved in this man in the meeting.
She was having none of it though...
“Dave, I’m WARNING you.
NEVER bring him here.
Do you hear me?
Never!”
Woah.
(Consider yourself warned Alston!)
So what did I do?
I er…
Invited him to our house?
Yup.
Three weeks later.
And so.
Catastrophe was unleashed on all of us...
Over the next year this chap ended up splitting the church down the middle. Slandered the leaders. Infiltrated the worship group.
Smashed up a lovely guitar I gave to encourage him.
Started intimidating our family.
His poisonous lips threatened violence too.
In fact...
One night he even threatened the pastor and his family with a baseball bat at their home. Police called, horrible.
“I told you.”
My wife said.
So.
She had gotten the... big 'NO!' from the LORD.
That, which under the Old Testament, required the Urim to hear so precisely, my wife received in under a split second.
Important instructions for our safety no less.
And 100% CLARITY.
Which I skipped.
A painful lesson.
Yup.
Therefore when the LORD speaks to you so clearly like that... He is revealing your future (good or bad). Don't ignore it.
Nevertheless,
The Urim is a revealer of good things in your future too.
Like once when driving, I asked the LORD about decisions I needed to make to move our family back up to Scotland.
Almost immediately...
He reminded me of a strange prophecy written on a piece of paper and handed to me five years earlier. A prophecy which made no sense at all (it seemed almost a 'crank' type prophecy at the time).
Then wham!
In a flash I instantly saw everything.
The mysterious prophecy sprang open, decoded as I drove.
Our future opened.
Every step to return to Scotland revealed, the exact new job etc.
Everything.
Joy bubbled up in my spirit, peace witnessing the way was open.
And so,
Knowing it was 'the Urim' speaking and not just a random idea,
First thing next morning...
I phoned the company I'd 'seen' in the 'decoded prophecy'... and cheekily asked them for a job, (despite apparently no vacancies being open).*
Btw.
The company had most of their operations in England. So even if there was a position, it was highly unlikely to be up in Scotland.
Anyhow,
On the phone...
Though quite surprised at my call, they put me through to the Director. He thought my timing uncanny because they might possibly have a job opening in a few weeks...
In of all places… Edinburgh, Scotland!
Anyway, long story short, he called me back.
I got the job :)
Thus we all moved back to Scotland with much joy.
Praise GOD!
Yet,
One thing made this happen...
The Urim and Thummim = ACCURACY.
Or as the Psalmist puts it…
"The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple."
Psalm 119:131 KJV
We simply 'knew the future in advance'.
And of course,
When YOU SEE the actual future. You KNOW it will come to pass exactly as you have seen it.
Why?
Because GOD is showing you these things.
Not you!
That way you can have a holy, almost cheeky boldness.
Ask what you want and get it...
Because you already know it's yours.
Anyway,
Such boldness commands respect.
It gets attention...
Yet here's the thing, saint of the Most High and destined for sublime greatness…
Today.
We don't need the priest to be with us.
Or call for Ephod or Breastplate.
No.
Instead...
The 'Urim and Thummim' are inside every blood-washed New Testament believer. Living and speaking in every one of us.
Paul agrees...
Christ is in you, the hope of GLORY. (Colossians 1:27)

Our 'Great Light' in us.
Lighting us up.
Light.

How the heck did the guy in the congregation write down on paper the exact instructions to me getting this job FIVE YEARS before it happened? And hand it to me and say it was a 'Word from the Lord'... as indeed it proved to be after all?
