Hi,
Did you know Scotland’s national hero, Robert The Bruce lost massively in key aspects of his life?
Yet he still won.
Consider…
In pursuing his claim to the Scottish throne he stabbed to death John Comyn his rival (in a Church of all places... Greyfriars in Dumfries).
Eh... stabbers are not generally popular people. (And as a Christian I don’t condone his act at all).
As revenge...
His rebellion caused Edward I of England to capture his brothers. Edward then hung, drew and beheaded them. (Bad family news for Robert to bear).
He also imprisoned his wife and sisters in England (some in cages outside).
The Pope excommunicated him.
Fleeing for his life after Edward defeated him in battle at Methven ‘The Bruce’ was hunted across Scotland like a dog. Living rough, all seemed hopeless.
His future wiped out.
Yet…
In his weakest darkest moment…
As all hope for this lonely, despairing Scottish champion began ebbing away.
He saw a spider…
Struggling and failing, struggling and failing, struggling and failing to weave a web... until on the thirteenth straight try in a row…
The spider suddenly succeeded.
It is said Robert took heart and decided to carry on the fight. All despite how futile his prospects of defeating the English looked like at the time.
And futile they did look.
Yet, others depended on him.
So he pressed on.
(And yes, though it took nearly ten years, he got his wife back).
He defeated King Edward in the famous Battle of Bannockburn and is celebrated in Scotland to this day.
Thus he went on to set Scotland free.
An independent sovereign nation apart from England.
So I wonder…
Could it be you are the same?
(Even if you are stuck in a lonely cave now?)
The only question is…
Will you try again?
Jesus believes in you.
He doesn’t make mistakes.
And He didn’t when He chose you.
Blessings,
Dave Alston.
PS This story reminds me of an incredibly brave brother who attended our small Victory Discipleship School online.
One night he came on our Thursday prayer call meeting distraught…
“I got home tonight from work and my wife has just left me. She packed everything and took our five children with her an hour ago...
I met them in the driveway. I ran up the street chasing the car begging her to stay. She just drove off with everyone crying.”
It was heartbreaking to hear. Of course all began praying.
And wonderfully, by GODs grace…
Jesus did an astonishing thing.
After they reconciled, his wife and family returned within the year.
The LORD has restored and since prospered them hugely too.
Halleluyah.
All the glory is for GOD who did it all.
So never give up saint… Jesus does what’s IMPOSSIBLE for us by ourselves.
He will do it for you…
Jesus looked at them and said,
“With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Matthew 19:26 ESV
BTW Last thing.
I am a Scot too and one day my uncle told me…
Our family line goes back to King Robert The Bruce himself!
Later I remembered back in our Bible College days…
I’d actually preached and sung outdoors in the exact place where Robert the Bruces wife was caged high on the thick stone walls above the gate of the town entrance.
Wow.
Funny how GOD works things eh?
Yet,
You have Jesus Christ, King of Kings and LORD of LORDS, as your blood relative… which makes Robert the Bruce small fry in comparison.
So now rise up and FIGHT and pray for your life, and loved ones too. Take up your royal kingly authority in Christ. Pray and rescue them because they need you.
Jesus will give you power to do what seems impossible…
“Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”
Luke 10:19 NKJV
